City quality work and training in a premier regional law firm

Here at Foot Anstey our corporate team supports a wide range of clients, from global businesses on transactions with an international dimension to entrepreneurs and business owners requiring local expertise and connections. The team includes three sub groups with distinct areas of focus: Corporates, OMB and Private Equity. Our corporate team was recently named the most active legal adviser in the South West M&A market during 2014 in a report compiled by Experian.

The Corporates group is made up largely of City and international firm lawyers who focus on helping clients, examples being UBM and Succession, make lasting and significant improvements to their businesses by offering a City-quality service at a regional price.

As the leading OMB advisor in the South West for clients, our OMB lawyers are experts that specialise in providing corporate advice to owner managed businesses and SMEs.

We have seen fast growth in our private equity sub-group.  Matt Stoate joined Foot Anstey four years ago having trained and qualified into the private equity department of a major City law firm and subsequently spending several years working for a corporate finance boutique in London. After 18 months with Foot Anstey, he was asked to put together a specialist Private Equity team, dedicated to private equity and venture capital transactions. The team has been extremely busy and grown hugely in the last two and a half years advising institutional investors, management teams, investee and portfolio companies and banks on the full life cycle of private equity transactions.

The Private Equity team advise clients such as HgCapital, Business Growth Fund and Phoenix Equity Partners and 2014 saw some of the highest profile transactions to date for the Corporate team. For example, it advised new client Genghis Midco, an HgCapital backed company, on its acquisition of The Parts Alliance and other subsequent bolt-on acquisitions. Matt commented: "This is a significant new relationship for Foot Anstey for a client accustomed to instructing leading City and international firms. We were delighted to be involved with this key strategic acquisition and to demonstrate our private equity expertise in the style and manner which the client demanded."

New arrivals

The Private Equity team has been recently bolstered by the arrival of senior associates, Henry Humphreys and Emily Settle both from major City law firms, and includes two further solicitors who work wholly or mainly in this specialism. Matt has high hopes for 2015 and wants to capitalise on the huge opportunities in the sector: “We’re extremely well placed to grow our Corporate team and are looking forward to expanding further over the coming months.”

The Corporate team is looking for people at all levels: those joining us at a junior level would see a high level of training, while those at an associate level would experience the support they need to take on increased responsibilities. Matt explains: “Our people are very important to us. We're looking to give our lawyers exposure of all three sub groups within the corporate team – and the opportunity to specialise as they become more senior as part of agreed bespoke development plans.  Our team is entrepreneurial and hungry to grow and develop – we offer an exciting opportunity for lawyers to come in and (with support) take their careers in the direction in which they choose.

“We can genuinely offer City quality work with City-based institutional clients with international reach, in beautiful surroundings with a great work life balance”, he adds.
